Charlie’s journey into work and a new future

January 15, 2026

We are pleased to share a video created by the BANES team about a young man called Charlie. Charlie had support from WE Work to get into paid work and recently completed his 6-month probation.

He was first referred to WE Work through his local autism support service BASS. He had spent time at Bath City Farm and wanted to get a paid job.  However he found this hard because of his anxiety and often talked himself out of trying new things.

Charlie first thought about working in a café, but felt too anxious to take that step. Through WE Work, he looked at other types of work that might suit him and decided to explore work in a care home.

Before applying, Charlie visited the care home to see what it was like. This helped him to feel more confident. He then applied for a job as a kitchen assistant and was was offered 15 hours a week.

Charlie has now been in his job for several months. He does not need to shadow anyone anymore. He works on his own and feels proud of what he has achieved. He enjoys the job and often does extra hours. He has also moved off Universal Credit.

He says WE Work has made a big difference to his life – he feels supported and more confident.

“The whole journey has been life changing for me and they have been really supportive of me…”
