From Bakery to Hotel Kitchen: Jason’s New Beginning

Jason joined Step and Stone a year ago through a WE Work for Everyone referral.
Before this, Jason worked in a café and then spent several years caring for a family member.
Jason started at The Park Bakery, where he learned work skills, built his confidence, and improved his social skills. It quickly became clear that Jason was ready for work. He learned new tasks quickly and worked well on his own.
Jason then joined the Woodworking Group at Redcatch Community Garden. He helped make planters from recycled wooden pallets. This helped him learn more work skills and become confident talking to different people.
While at Step and Stone, Jason was supported by the Work Transitions Team to look for paid employment. He wanted a catering job working in a kitchen. He applied for many jobs and attended interviews and a work trial. Although he was not successful at first, he kept trying.
Jason’s resilience was incredible and he dealt with knock-backs with good grace and his signature smile.
A New Job!
After a year at Step and Stone, Jason was offered a full-time job as a Kitchen Porter at The Clayton Hotel.
A Step and Stone Job Coach supported Jason at his interview and on his first day. Jason travelled to work independently from the start.
The hotel’s HR and People Team were very supportive and helped with his training. Because Jason became so independent, he has not needed any job coaching. Step and Stone have stayed in touch and continue to support him when needed.
Jason is an example of someone who, with the right work ethic and some support can achieve great results.
